Fibromyalgia: A therapeutic consultation
Fibromyalgia is a common chronic condition that causes widespread pain throughout the body, having a huge individual and societal impact. It is a condition that presents regularly within general practice, yet it can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Research suggests that patients with fibromyalgia often feel invalidated and unsupported with their condition. Similarly, doctors often feel uncertain regarding the diagnosis and powerless to provide suitable treatment. This often results in difficult therapeutic relationships. This article aims to explore the definition, diagnosis and management of fibromyalgia with an emphasis on the importance of a well-structured consultation, where patient education and patient-centred care is a priority.
