Life in Hut 23: the Turing Research Engineering Group

The Alan Turing Institute's Research Engineering Group (REG) is one of the largest concentrations of research software engineering and data science capability in the UK. This talk is a short tour of how it works in practice and the fascinating range of work we do. If you're in the job market, you might want to stay to the end.The talk starts with our roles. REG has not one job title but several: Research Software Engineer, Research Data Scientist, Research Computing Engineer and Data Wrangler. We set out what distinguishes them, and how they have much more in common than not. It then turns to the practices that hold the team together, such as hack week, mentorship and away days.REG does not work alone. The talk describes how we collaborate with colleagues elsewhere in the Turing and beyond. The centre of the talk is a showcase of current work across Environment & Sustainability, Health, Fundamental Research, and Defence & National Security, chosen to show the scale of impact, as well as domain and technical approach.The talk finishes with future opportunities to join the team.
