Self-Destructive Drive as a Mechanism of Agonistic Flow in Extreme Human Performance
This paper proposes agonistic flow as a distinct cognitive state accessed through sustained voluntary confrontation with physiological limits, integrating Csikszentmihalyi's flow theory, Dietrich's transient hypofrontality hypothesis, and Noakes's central governor model. We define diagnostic criteria, identify boundary conditions separating productive self-destruction from pathology, and review evidence across ultra-endurance sport, addiction recovery, cold exposure, and contemplative practice. The model extends to addiction's "rock bottom" phenomenon, reframing it as involuntary prefrontal breakdown producing the same clarity state that athletes access deliberately.
