Preparing More Than Teachers: Human Capital Development for the Next Generation of Educators
This study examines the preparation of prospective teachers through a human capital perspective that extends beyond conventional teaching competencies. The study aims to explore how professional readiness can be strengthened by integrating technical knowledge with communication, leadership, collaboration, emotional competence, adaptability, reflective capacity, and lifelong learning. Drawing on an international community engagement program involving undergraduate education students at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, the study discusses the program context, participatory learning approach, reflection, and evaluation of outcomes. The discussion highlights a shift in participants’ understanding of professional development from subject-matter mastery toward multidimensional professional capabilities. The study concludes with practical implications for higher education and teacher education, while identifying limitations and directions for future programs.
