Family Caregivers’ Experiences and Support Needs in Home Palliative Care : A Literature Review
Family caregivers are essential partners in home-based palliative care, yet many report feeling unprepared for the complex responsibilities they assume. This literature review synthesizes findings from four peer-reviewed studies (three systematic reviews and one metasynthesis) to answer the question: among family caregivers of adults receiving palliative care at home, what are their support needs and experiences with home and community support services? Three themes emerged: caregivers take on substantial and evolving responsibilities with limited preparation; caregivers require ongoing informational, practical, and emotional support; and the accessibility and coordination of home and community services shape the caregiving experience. These findings point to concrete opportunities for nursing practice, including proactive needs assessment, structured medication education, multicomponent psychoeducational interventions, and individualized; family-centred communication. Strengthening support for family caregivers is a critical component of delivering safe, compassionate, and sustainable palliative care at home.
