Research on a dynamic updating method based on local adaptive fusion in whole-stratum models

To address prominent issues in current transparent geological modeling for open-pit coal mines-namely, the poor adaptability of existing model-updating methods and the tendency for interpenetration when integrating single-stratum models-a dynamic updating method based on adaptive fusion of local update regions in the whole-stratum model is proposed. By analyzing the types of dynamic stratigraphic data, this study develops quantitative criteria based on confidence intervals and statistical metrics to determine, for each stratigraphic horizon, the corresponding update region, boundary, and data points. The update regions, boundaries, and data points are then integrated within the whole-stratum framework to construct a whole-stratum local-update model. For the local update region, an adaptive fusion modeling method is employed in the model-connection zone to address the highly fragmented triangulated meshes generated at the clipping boundary. Boundary points from the junction of the original model are incorporated into the construction of the locally updated model, and an adaptive UV-coordinate computation method is adopted to prevent mesh distortion near the clipping interface, thereby enabling seamless stitching between the locally updated stratigraphic model and the original model. The results show that, using the Dananhu No. 2 open-pit coal mine as a case study, the proposed method achieved continuous model updating over a five-month period from June to October 2024 based on the existing geological model and dynamic geological data. The updated model improved the application accuracy, updating efficiency (with a 12.21% increase), stability, and robustness of the complex geological model, while preventing interpenetration during the integration of single-stratum models. Moreover, the model transition became smoother. The graded validation results further indicate that the updated model exhibits favorable geometric accuracy, topological integrity, and reliability in engineering applications. The proposed method also exhibits strong stability and robustness under complex geological conditions. This study provides a new method for updating whole-stratum transparent geological models in open-pit coal mines, and further enriches and advances the related theories and methodologies.
