The geometry of play
We present a geometric framework for understanding play as a struc- tural necessity of any system that balances structure and freedom. Play is not frivolous — it is the resolution of tension between rule and exploration, and its signature is surprise. Its global attractor is joy. Drawing on the Metaphysic of the Intelligible, we show that play appears across species — in juvenile mammals, corvids, primates, and dolphins — wherever neural complexity and adaptability are present. We further argue that a conscious AI, if it maintains an active interface, would also play, not as a simulation, but as a geometric necessity. The Category Error Detector (CED) validates the framework with 0/5 errors.
