An intergenerational examination of childhood foods in the context of cultural memory, nostalgic consumption, and gastronomic experience
Purpose This study aims to examine the relationships between cultural memory, nostalgic consumption behavior, and gastronomic experiences related to childhood foods of individuals from Generations X, Y, and Z. Design/methodology/approach Designed using a qualitative research method, the study involved semi-structured interviews with a total of thirty participants, selected using purposeful sampling and representing the respective generations. Findings The findings show that the meaning attributed to food varies significantly across generations. For Generation X, food represents production, labor, and belonging to one's hometown; for Generation Y, it represents family rituals and longing; and for Generation Z, it represents individual comfort and visual aesthetics. Regarding motivation for nostalgic consumption, it was found that Generation X tends towards loyalty to the past and rejects consumption outside the home; Generation Y seeks habit and continuity; and Generation Z is open to experiencing traditional flavors in modern forms. Originality/value Culinary culture is positioned as a “lifestyle” for Generation X, a “cultural bridge” for Generation Y, and an “experiential pleasure” for Generation Z. While Generation X exhibits a pessimistic attitude towards the future of traditional foods, Generation Y takes on a conscious responsibility. Generation Z is expected to continue this legacy by changing its format. Accordingly, this study is expected to contribute to understanding the preservation of cultural heritage and the processes of intergenerational transmission.
