The Breathing Universe: 212_Proto-Time-Crystal Ordering, Recursive Coherence, and Nested Snapping

This paper develops a structural recurrence framework for the Breathing Universe Model (BUM) and distinguishes two qualitatively different time-crystal-like regimes. The first, proto-time-crystal-like ordering, is characterized by structured near-return without reliable cycle closure, measurable duration, or conventional physical time. The second, proper time-crystal-like ordering, emerges only after snapping, realization, and successful re-stabilization, and is characterized by persistence-supported recurrent closure, structural p-cycles, phase stability, and perturbative robustness. Snapping is treated as a discontinuous realization reconfiguration and is explicitly distinguished from phase locking, resonance, feedback, bifurcation, superposition, symmetry breaking, and other established dynamical mechanisms. These processes may facilitate, prevent, or shape snapping, but are not identified with snapping itself. The framework extends recurrence across nested organizational levels, allowing local and global recurrence, harmonic and subharmonic organization, phase and frequency locking, beat structures, mode competition, and conditional snap cascades. A central proposition is that structural ordering and recurrence do not yet constitute physical time. Stable recurrence first enables cycle identity and countability, synchronization permits shared ordering, and physical time appears only downstream through temporal projection from the pre-temporal ordering parameter tau to emergent physical time t. After projection and coarse-graining, the recurrence architecture can be represented through ordinary covariant effective-field dynamics. In the cosmological sector, the paper preserves the mature BUM horizon-regulated vacuum residual, Lambda_BUM proportional to R_H^-2, as the leading background and treats recurrent oscillations and nested snapping as possible subleading dynamical modulations rather than replacements for the leading near-LambdaCDM cosmology. The framework is compared with nonlinear dynamics, synchronization theory, bifurcation theory, nonequilibrium phase transitions, effective field theory, and established laboratory time crystals. These known mechanisms are not claimed as BUM-specific; the distinctive proposal lies in their structural placement within an emergence hierarchy extending from pre-temporal near-recurrence through snapping and persistent recurrence to temporal projection and observable dynamics. The paper concludes with observable signature classes, falsification criteria, and a minimal numerical toy model demonstrating the sequence from proto-near-recurrence to critical loading, snapping, re-stabilization, and a stable p-cycle. The work does not claim that the vacuum is a physical time crystal. Rather, it proposes that time-crystal-like recurrence may possess a structural precursor upstream of measurable time, with physical temporal periodicity emerging only after recurrent coherence becomes persistent, countable, synchronized, and projected into spacetime.
