2026 Vol-6 Issue-2 | MOISTURE CHARACTERISTICS AND SELECTED PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF A RICE PRODUCING WETLAND IN UBANI IBEKU ABIA STATE, SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIA
This study investigated the moisture characteristics and selected physical properties of a rice-producing wetland in Ubani Ibeku, located in Abia State, Southeastern Nigeria. Wetlands play a critical role in sustaining rice cultivation due to their unique hydrological and soil characteristics. However, the productivity of these wetlands is heavily influenced by their moisture characteristics and physical properties, which vary depending on land use and management practices. Soil samples were collected randomly from three rice farms and replicated three times in Ubani-Ibeku at the depth of 0-20cm, using soil auger and core samplers and analyzed in the laboratory for moisture and physical parameters. The organic matter contents of the soil samples were also determined due to their influence in both hydrological characteristics and physical properties of soils. Data generated from laboratory analysis were subjected to ANOVA, while significant means were separated using LSD at 5% probability level. Physically, the soils exhibited a predominant clay loam to loamy texture, which enhances water retention. Bulk density values ranged from 1.13 to 1.34 g/cm³, indicating moderate compaction suitable for rice cultivation. The mean Organic matter content was above 3%, even with the intensive and continuous cultivation, reflecting the accumulation of organic matter under anaerobic conditions. This study provides a baseline for understanding the wetland soils of Ubani Ibeku, contributing to sustainable rice production and effective land management in Southeastern Nigeria.
