To Evaluate the Efficacy of Natural Extract Mouthwash vs Chlorhexidine Mouthwash as an Adjunct to Mechanical Plaque Control for the Treatment of Gingivitis
Background: Gingivitis occurs due to plaque accumulation, while scaling and chemotherapeutic agents (mouthwashes) are often used for treatment and prevention of the same. The use of traditional over-the-counter products such as chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash for a prolonged period can cause adverse effects. To avoid this, herbal alternatives are gaining prominence for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties with minimal adverse effects. Objectives: This study evaluates and compares the effectiveness of natural extract mouthwash and 0.2% CHX mouthwash for gingivitis management.Methodology: Fifty-five patients between the ages of 20 and 50 with gingivitis were enrolled in three groups: Patients in group A were managed with scaling; group B was managed with scaling plus CHX mouthwash; and group C had scaling with follow-up natural extract mouthwash. The patients in groups B and C were directed to use the allocated mouthwash formulation twice per day as part of the intervention protocol for 14 days. The modified gingival index (MGI), Plaque Index (PI), and bleeding index (BI) these indices were recorded at baseline as well as on days 7 and 14.Results: All three groups showed improvements.By day 14, the natural extract mouthwash had a greater reduction in gingival inflammation and bleeding scores.Chlorhexidine was better at controlling plaque. The natural extract mouthwash showed more consistent results. Conclusion: Patients who want to seek natural ways might find natural extract mouthwash to be a good alternative. It helped reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding, particularly for patients sensitive to CHX side effects.Chlorhexidine will remain superior for plaque control, but some herbal options may enhance anti-inflammatory benefits. These findings suggest that herbal treatment could be useful in personalized gingivitis care.Larger and longer-term studies are needed to confirm these findings.
