The economic viability of green technology adoption in Global South countries: An ex-ante evaluation using time series predictions of carbon emissions

Green technology adoption in the Global South is vital due to rapid industrial growth and reliance on fossil fuels, leading to increased carbon footprints. This study explores how economic evaluation models: Cost-Benefit Analysis, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, and Social Impact Investing-can aid policymakers in selecting green technology projects that reduce emissions and operational costs. Analyzing historical data from three countries, we find significant increases in sector-level emissions over the past two decades, with forecasts indicating continued rises except in Kenya’s energy sector, which is expected to decline. These results underscore the urgent need for effective green technology implementation.

Abstract

Green technology adoption in the Global South is vital due to rapid industrial growth and reliance on fossil fuels, leading to increased carbon footprints. This study explores how economic evaluation models: Cost-Benefit Analysis, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, and Social Impact Investing-can aid policymakers in selecting green technology projects that reduce emissions and operational costs. Analyzing historical data from three countries, we find significant increases in sector-level emissions over the past two decades, with forecasts indicating continued rises except in Kenya’s energy sector, which is expected to decline.
