Passive vs. Active Cognitive Verification: Why Behavioral-Only Detection Hits a Structural Ceiling

Invisible, passive behavioral verification (keystroke, mouse, and scroll dynamics) has become the dominant approach to frictionless bot and account-takeover detection, validated commercially at scale Visa's $2.4B acquisition of BioCatch in 2025 is the clearest signal of market appetite for this category. This paper describes a structural limitation of pure behavioral analysis a sufficiently trained model can learn to reproduce a plausible human motor pattern, because motor pattern is all that is being measured and presents an architecture (HCS-U7 / BrowserGuard) that keeps the same zero-friction default but adds a second, independent signal: a brief active cognitive proof, triggered only when passive confidence drops, combined with a decoupled drift/anomaly risk engine and channel-level network defense around the verification mechanism itself. The paper documents what is deployed in production versus what remains an open threat model, deliberately, so that a technical evaluator can verify each claim rather than take it on faith.
