SHPO-CON-241: Lt. Col. Van Mullem: SHPO Concurrence Letter for Repair and Resurfacing of Surf Road

This document is a letter from the California State Historic Preservation Office to Vandenberg Air Force Base regarding the Repair of Surf Road project. The letter conveys that the SHPO agrees that reasonable measures were taken to identify historic properties. The letter acknowledges that eight archaeological sites are on or near Surf Road. The SHPO concurred that seven of the sites will not be impacted by the project. The SHPO also concurs that the a drainage channel to be constructed in archaeological site CA-SBA-1125, although previously determined eligible for the National Register, that portion of the site to be disturbed by the drainage channel will not affect the eligibility of the site. The SHPO was unable to concur on the project with a finding of no adverse effect because of the potential impact to CA-SBA-1125. Rather, the SHPO stated it would concur on a finding of adverse effect and advised VAFB to submit the entire Section 105 consultation package to the Advisory Council. Therefore, this letter does not conclude the Section 106 consultation for this project.
