The Impact of Digital Technology on Students' Academic Performance in Nigerian Universities

Digital technology has become an important part of university education, providing students with access to smartphones, computers, online learning platforms, digital libraries, electronic books, academic websites, and other digital resources. This paper examines the impact of digital technology on students’ academic performance in Nigerian universities. The paper is based on existing academic literature and a review of issues surrounding the use of digital technology in higher education. It discusses the potential benefits of digital technology, including improved access to learning materials, easier communication, flexible learning, independent study, and opportunities for collaborative learning. At the same time, students face several challenges, including poor internet connectivity, the high cost of internet data, limited access to electronic devices, inadequate digital skills, and distractions associated with social media and other non-academic online activities. The discussion indicates that digital technology can support students’ learning and academic performance when appropriate digital resources are accessible and used effectively. However, technology alone does not guarantee improved academic outcomes; its educational value depends largely on how students use digital tools and the extent to which universities provide adequate infrastructure, affordable internet access, digital learning resources, and appropriate training. The paper recommends that Nigerian universities improve digital infrastructure and access to online learning resources, provide digital literacy training, support affordable internet access, and guide students in the effective academic use of digital technology. Students are also encouraged to develop responsible and disciplined digital-learning habits. When these measures are combined, digital technology can serve as an effective tool for supporting teaching, learning, and academic performance in Nigerian universities.
