What Kind of Thing is Science-Engaged Theology?

The emergence of science-engaged theology (SET) marks a significant development within the intellectual trajectory of the broader science-and-religion (S&R) field. Yet the precise relationship of SET to its progenitor discipline remains unclear. The important question before us is whether SET constitutes a mere sub-specialism of S&R, or whether it marks a substantive departure, distinguished by either its intellectual tradition, fundamental subject matter or methodological commitments. The intention of this article, then, is to identify the principal forms that SET might take before assessing the claim of each to be a truly distinct enterprise from the wider field of S&R.
