Strife Between the Women's National Team Athletes and the Governing Body—Pay Equity in Canadian Soccer
ABSTRACT A pay gap dispute with the athletes on the Canada Women's National Soccer Team and the Canadian Soccer Association underscores critical ethical concerns surrounding gender equity, labor rights and collective bargaining, and a governing body's avoidance of accountability. Catalyzed by advocacy from the women's national team, these conflicts illuminate systemic inequities in resource allocation and the valuation of athletes' contributions across gender lines. Tensions are presented between the Canadian Soccer Association and the women's national team, spotlighting issues regarding compensation equity, organization transparency, and stakeholder relations. The reader is challenged to investigate pivotal moments: the initial demand for pay equity and supporting resources, the Canadian Soccer Association's public responses—including obfuscation, and finally efforts toward resolution, including with Canada Soccer Business.
