Optimal control at stop of linear motor dedicated to continuous braking of wind energy system

This paper presents a new standstill control technology for a linear motor dedicated to the controlled braking of wind power generation systems. The linear motor studied structure is obtained by converting a rotating axial permanent magnet synchronous motor into a linear motor. This conversion is based on the spreading of a cylindrical cross-section of the axial motor. The control law of this type of motor is similar to the control law of the permanent magnet axial motor. The only difference between the two motor structures is the conversion of rotational motion into translational motion. The developed control law is both optimized and simplified by considering that the linear motor is controlled at low displacement, which is equivalent to control at rest. The analytical model enabling the transition from the axial structure to the linear structure is validated using the two-dimensional finite element method. The vibrations of the mechanical system subjected to the pressure force of the linear motor are studied and analyzed. The braking system model is implemented in the Simulink simulation environment. The simulation results are of a very high scientific standard and encourage the industrialization of the studied braking system.
