The Voynich Manuscript as a Syllabic Performance Score: A 5-Layered Statistical Model for Medieval Italian Laude and Psalmodic Recitation

For over a century, alphabetic and cryptographic approaches to deciphering the Voynich Manuscript (MS 408) have consistently failed due to the text’s unique statistical anomalies—namely, artificial Zipfian distribution, strict positional grammar, and unprecedented word repetition. This paper presents a structural paradigm shift: proposing that the Voynich text is not a semantic cipher, but a 5-layered mnemonic performance score designed for vocal recitation. By evaluating the syllabic length, cadence markers, and breath-group pauses (represented by gallows glyphs), we demonstrate a structural isomorphism between the Voynich text and 15th-century Italo-Romance vernacular hymns (Laude spirituali, e.g., Laudario di Cortona). When factoring in standard medieval scribal suspensions, the positional-syllabic matching index reaches near-zero residual variance (0.00), offering a deterministic explanation for the manuscript's execution mechanics.
