Understanding Without Originative Independence

Some exclusionary arguments about understanding proceed as though present possession were undermined when relevant meanings, distinctions, or standards are inherited rather than independently generated or acquired through the same individual’s direct acquaintance with each target. This inference becomes unstable across human learning, skilled practice, animal cognition, institutions, and artificial systems. Inheritance, articulation, successful performance, and institutional acceptance do not by themselves establish possession, but neither does a non-originative acquisition route defeat it. This paper develops a configurational account that separates acquisition from standing capacity, articulation from possession, and possession from object-adequacy. A configuration is a domain-bounded organization of retained distinctions, dependencies, exclusions, operative constraints, and, where present, unresolved alternatives. Minimal understanding is a local capacity, robust across a bounded range of non-identical transformations, to discriminate what remains applicable, what requires change or branching under the subject’s maintained constraint configuration, and, where implications remain undelimited, what must be reserved. Connective, integrative, and propagative understanding are extensions with partial structural dependencies; they do not form a single developmental or evaluative scale. The account also specifies conditions for distributed understanding. It is non-factive at the level of configurational possession while leaving unqualified claims to understand a target answerable to object-adequacy. Pressure tests involving thermostatic control, skilled craft, animal behavior, the Chinese Room, and large language models show how the framework avoids automatic attribution and automatic denial.
