A Provisional Linguistic Reading of the Dispilio Tablet

Morphological and frequency analysis of the Dispilio Tablet suggests that several recurring signs have close visual correspondences with later Greek characters, while two unusually frequent signs produce a substantially more Greek-like distribution when provisionally read as Α and Σ rather than literally as Ξ and Ψ. Under this constrained substitution, the surviving text yields recurrent sequences including ΤΙΣ, ΑΕΙ, ΓΑ, ΠΑΙ, ΕΠΙ, ΕΙΣ, ΣΕ, while an alternative frequency-constrained mapping also produces ΟΙ, ΥΟΙ, ΣΑΣ, ΕΩΣ. None of these correspondences constitutes a decipherment, but taken together they permit a tentative semantic reconstruction along the lines of “Your sons remain always upon the earth, until you”. This should be understood strictly as an exploratory reading hypothesis, not as an established translation, since it presupposes substantial differences in prehistoric grammar, orthography, and possibly elliptical syntax.
