While Indonesia celebrated, the earth took a home away
This poem reflects on the emotional tension between Indonesia's Independence Day celebration and the grief caused by a devastating earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara. Set against the symbolic presence of the red-and-white flag, national ceremonies, and collective expressions of freedom, the poem shifts attention toward families confronting loss, displacement, fear, and uncertainty. It questions what independence means when fellow citizens are struggling to rebuild their lives and suggests that national belonging must be expressed through empathy, solidarity, and shared mourning. Through images of broken homes, temporary shelters, trembling ground, and hands reaching for one another, the poem presents grief not only as an individual experience but also as a collective responsibility. In doing so, it positions poetic language as a space for witnessing suffering, fostering emotional recognition, and imagining communal healing. The poem ultimately reframes independence as an ethical commitment to remain present for one another, especially when celebration and sorrow exist at the same time.
