Innovative Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategies in Iraq’s Oil Industry
Abstract The oil and gas industry produces considerable volumes of waste, including produced water, oil sludge, and flue gases, which can lead to environmental degradation. Waste treatment and management need to be suitably applied to reduce the adverse effects related with these waste streams. Research demonstrates that industrial waste treatment necessitates resource recovery systems based on circular economy principles to achieve sustainable waste management solutions. This approach comprises converting waste materials into valued products, thereby protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices across industrial operations. The study investigates three separate waste groups resulting from oil and gas industry operations. The research aims to identify the different characteristics of these wastes while exploring their treatment methods, current obstacles, and future potential for treatment improvements. The research explores these waste streams to determine which resources could be recovered and reused. The research presents an Iraqi case study that analyzes these waste streams to evaluate their resource recovery potential and economic value.
