Nepal A Warning to the Entire Himalayan Arc
Abstract This article argues that Nepal’s recent high-altitude ice, rock, and flood disaster should be understood as a warning for the wider Himalayan arc. It links climate-driven glacial instability with illegal extraction, weak regulation, damaged watersheds, risky infrastructure, and growing water insecurity. By treating Nepal as a case study, the piece shows how seemingly local mountain failures can become regional crises affecting rivers, hydropower, agriculture, settlements, and cross-border governance. It concludes that protecting Himalayan watersheds requires stronger monitoring, transparent environmental assessment, legal enforcement, and support for mountain communities already adapting to changing water systems.
