Relationship Intelligence: An Integrative Conceptual Framework for Emotional Safety, Attachment, Communication, and Relationship Quality

Relationship Intelligence (RI) is proposed as an integrative conceptual framework for understanding how individuals perceive, interpret, regulate, communicate, and respond to relational information within intimate relationships. Drawing upon established research in adult attachment, emotion regulation, interpersonal responsiveness, intimacy, communication, conflict processes, relationship quality, commitment, and dyadic interdependence, this conceptual paper examines how these traditionally distinct psychological processes may operate together as a coordinated relational capacity. The framework proposes six interrelated dimensions of Relationship Intelligence: Relational Self-Awareness; Partner Attunement and Perspective-Taking; Emotional Regulation; Relational Communication; Conflict Navigation and Repair; and Emotional Safety and Responsive Connection. The paper further introduces the Relationship Intelligence Arc™, a recursive relational-processing model comprising eight stages: Notice → Understand Self → Attune → Regulate → Communicate → Navigate → Repair → Integrate. Three additional concepts are proposed within the framework: Interactional Metacognition, referring to the ability to recognize recurring patterns created through the interaction of both partners; Responsive Calibration, referring to the adjustment of relational responses according to how they are actually experienced by the partner; and Relational Coordination, describing the integration of awareness, regulation, attunement, communication, boundaries, conflict management, and repair. The manuscript also presents a preliminary Relationship Intelligence Scale (RIS) item framework and outlines a multi-stage research programme for future construct development, psychometric validation, dyadic testing, longitudinal research, cross-cultural validation, and intervention studies. Relationship Intelligence is presented as a proposed conceptual and research framework requiring empirical validation. It is not presented as an established psychological theory, validated intelligence construct, diagnostic instrument, or clinically validated intervention. Abstract
