Grandparent-grandchild relationship and adolescents’ attitudes toward aging: A cross-sectional study

Intergenerational relationships between grandparents and grandchildren may influence adolescents’ attitudes toward aging (ATA). This cross-sectional study conducted in Semnan, Iran, examined associations between GP–GC relationship quality and ATA among 592 adolescents aged 9–17 years. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires and analyzed in SPSS version 27. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed, with statistical significance set at p < .05.Results showed that participants’ mean age was 12.66 (SD = 1.67) years, with 53.4% being girls. Adolescentsgenerally held moderate ATA, with higher appreciation than prejudice. Participatory involvement was negatively associated with prejudice. Boys reported higher prejudice and more negative overall attitudes than girls. Additionally, appreciation was higher among adolescents living with grandparents and those identifying a closer grandparent. Gender and closest grandparent also predicted overall ATA.Findings highlight the importance of both structural and relational aspects of intergenerational relationships in shaping adolescents’ ATA.
