A Lightweight Magnetic Solar Deflector Based on Inflatable Fractal Cells at the L1 Point.
A concept for a lightweight magnetic deflector designed to provide local protection of satellites from solar wind is proposed. The device is a deployable probe with a diameter of about 15 meters, consisting of inflatable cells filled with rarefied xenon. Pulsed magnetic fields with an induction of up to 300 mT are generated on the surface of the cells. The study examines particle deflection physics, power supply, thermal balance, materials, mass, and mission cost. The total mass of the apparatus is estimated at 400 kg, and the mission cost is approximately 90 million US dollars. The work demonstrates the possibility of creating a low-cost and scalable active protection system for key spacecraft
