Social Gravity: The Evolutionary and Logical Foundations of Voluntary Order

Libertarian theory anchors legitimate social order in the nonaggression principle (NAP), but it has struggled to explain how voluntary cooperation generates prosperity beyond that encouraged by the absence of coercion. This article fills that gap by revealing reciprocity as dual-polarity “social gravity”: Negative reciprocity (nonaggression) operates as the absolute prohibition that establishes the legal foundation of rights, while positive reciprocity (proactive investment) functions as an apodictic moral duty constitutive of rational community—and, within that community, as a discovery procedure for identifying mutually beneficial relationships (Slenzok 2022; 2026). Synthesizing evolutionary biology (Trivers 1971), virtue ethics (Becker 1986), praxeology (Mises [1949] 1963; Rothbard 1982), and influence science (Cialdini 2009; 2016), I show how positive reciprocity solves Friedrich Hayek’s knowledge problem in social and economic relationships—revealing which potential partners are reliable cooperators before significant resources are committed. The framework makes explicit the generative mechanisms of libertarian principles in practice and supplies actionable tools for entrepreneurs, homesteaders, and leaders who seek to build voluntary order through strategic relationship discovery while upholding absolute nonaggression.
