Socioeconomic inequality and student experiences in Cambodian higher education: A qualitative study
The study explores the influence of socioeconomic factors on academic engagement and success among Cambodian university students, focusing on family income, parental occupation, and resource accessibility. Using a qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six undergraduate students from private institutions to capture lived experiences and coping strategies. Thematic analysis revealed three major categories: (1) socioeconomic influence on academic engagement, (2) barriers to learning and academic success, and (3) coping strategies and support needs. Findings suggest that financial stress, work-study imbalance, and limited parental academic guidance significantly hinder academic performance and well-being, often leading to reduced motivation and dropout risk. While some students demonstrated resilience through budgeting and time management, these strategies cannot fully offset structural disadvantages. The study recommends targeted interventions, including scholarships, mentorship programs, mental health services, and improved digital access, to promote equity in higher education.
