Investigation of the antibacterial effect of methanolic extract of Persimmon tree fruit on Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli bacteria
This study examines the antibacterial properties of a methanolic extract of fruit from the Persimmon tree (PE) which was collected from Mazandaran, Iran, against Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923). Major bioactive compounds like 2-furancarboxaldehyde, 5-(hydroxyl) (40.94%), 2-mercaptopropanoic acid (9.84%), and alpha-chloroacrylic acid (8.23%) were revealed by GC-MS analysis of the extract. Disk diffusion assays were used to assess antibacterial activity at concentrations of 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/mL. Gentamicin was used as a positive control, and the results showed dose-dependent inhibition zones of 7.33 ± 0.33 to 13.00 ± 0.56 mm for S. aureus and 0.00±0.00 to 11.33 ± 0.33 mm for E. coli. By using broth microdilution to determine minimum inhibitory (MIC) and bactericidal (MBC) concentrations (0.5-512 μg/mL), the phytochemicals rich in tannin and phenol were found to have a significant antimicrobial effect. These results demonstrate that, in the face of growing antibiotic resistance, persimmon fruit extract is a promising natural substitute for treating bacterial infections.
