Hive minds? Insect architecture and informational landscapes.
Fang et al. (2026) show that honeybee workers construct specialized queen brood cells with distinct physical and chemical properties that are required for normal queen development. By demonstrating that collective behavior becomes embodied in a functionally consequential structure, the study raises broader questions about the role of insect architecture in collective cognition.
