Synthesis of Tripotassium Trimetaphosphate from Trisodium Trimetaphosphate via Solution/Precipitation Ion Exchange Cycles
Cyclic trimetaphosphate (cTmp) has been used as a prebiotically plausible compound to generate chemically activated nucleoside 5′-phosphates. While cTmp is mainly available as a trisodium salt, some experiments benefit from different cations. This study describes a simple procedure for exchanging the sodium with potassium in solution and isolating the K3cTmp via ethanol precipitation, involving materials and equipment available in most biochemistry and molecular biology laboratories. Repeating the solution exchange and precipitation cycle four times allowed conversion of Na3cTmp, with more than 99% ion exchange efficiency, into K3cTmp, with an overall yield of 92%. This method has advantages over the usually used ion exchange chromatography and may be especially useful to prebiotic chemists working on cyclic trimetaphosphate. Analogous solution/precipitation ion exchange cycles could also be useful for ion exchange procedures of other compounds.
