The Predictive Role of Early Maladaptive Schemas and Schema Coping Styles in Explaining Dyadic Adjustment of Couples in Romantic Relationships
This study examined how early maladaptive schema (EMS) domains and schema coping styles predict dyadic adjustment in romantic relationships among 349 Turkish adults (246 females, 103 males). Results revealed that the disconnection schema domain negatively predicted all dimensions of dyadic adjustment. However, coping strategies such as anger suppression and avoidance of distressing thoughts positively predicted relationship quality, suggesting some adaptive effects. Intolerance to criticism was a strong negative predictor. The findings highlight the long-term influence of EMSs on romantic functioning and support the use of schema-based couple therapies, especially incorporating limited reparenting techniques to improve relational well-being.
