Eight key principles for embedding artificial intelligence to support the implementation and monitoring of 'Good Research Practice' in higher education institutions
Research integrity and research waste are linked problems: an estimated 85% of biomedical research effort is wasted, and generative artificial intelligence is already being used to fabricate research data and peer reviews. We previously developed ‘Good Research Practice’ (GRP), a framework helping higher education institutions address both problems and meet their obligations under the UK concordat to support research integrity, and AI is a plausible enabler of GRP. However, no existing framework describes how to embed AI in GRP, and doing so is an organisational and leadership challenge as much as a technical one. Drawing on leadership theory, the literature on power and political behaviour in organisational change, and established change-management frameworks, we propose eight key principles for developing a strategic plan to embed AI in GRP. These principles draw support from existing evidence on transformational leadership and participatory change, but have not been tested empirically as a set.
