RELIGIOUS TOURISM IN AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA: DIMENSIONS AND MOTIVATIONS
This study investigated the proliferation, dimensions, and motivations of religious tourism in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, a region increasingly defined by its spiritual diversity and faith-based travel. While globally recognised as an economic driver, religious tourism in the Nigerian context specifically within the South-South region requires a nuanced examination of its local manifestations. The study used mixed research methods involving questionnaires, field observation and interview. 350 participants were involved in the study. The research revealed that religious tourism in Akwa Ibom State has evolved from simple local worship into a significant socio-economic force. The study demonstrated that the state possesses a diverse landscape of religious attractions, ranging from traditional shrines, ancient "prayer houses" (Ufok Akam), modern digitalized prayer houses, and Pentecostal churches. By applying Religious Market Theory, the study identifies these religious centers as innovative "firms" that respond to the spiritual and socio-economic demands of the people. Through the provision of spiritual solace, social networking, and community support, these sites attract thousands of domestic and international tourists. This influx of tourists facilitates the transfer of funds, stimulates local commerce, and fosters social cohesion. The findings suggested that religious tourism is no longer just a matter of faith; it is a burgeoning industry that, if properly harnessed, can serve as a cornerstone for the sustainable development of Akwa Ibom State. The paper concluded with strategic recommendations for infrastructure development and policy frameworks to better integrate faith-based travel into the state's broader tourism master plan.
