A Case of Small Bowel Obstruction - Trichobezoar as a Rare Complication of Trichophagia in a Child: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract We discuss the case of a young girl presented with acute abdomen with palpable abdominal mass which was later diagnosed with trichobezoar. The patient underwent jejunoileal resection and it was removed. Postoperative psychiatric evaluation revealed anxiety and compulsive hair ingestion and treated with fluoxetine and supportive counseling showing a very good clinical response. Bezoars present as surgical emergency and often have underlying psychiatric problems. Cases of trichobezoar in the pediatric population are sparse but not unknown hence it becomes eminent to document them.
