Quality of life in older patients with cancer and cancer survivors living in French nursing homes

BACKGROUND: Quality of Life (QoL) of residents with Cancer and Cancer Survivors (CCSR) living in nursing homes is unknown. Our aim was to compare the QoL of these CCSR to the Cancer-Free residents' (CFR), using questionnaires also adapted to potential mild to moderate Neurocognitive Disorders (NCD). METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study included residents aged 70 years and older able to communicate. After inclusion of CSSR, CFR controlled residents were randomly selected matched on age, sex, cognitive and dependence status. RESULTS: The study was early terminated after inclusion of 42 CSSR of whom 25 matching with CFR. The median age was 86 years (78-90) and nineteen were male. No significant difference was found in either pain, nor QoL between CSSR and CFR. CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive status should be taken into account when choosing QoL questionnaires. Further research should assess QoL as acute and long-term adverse effects of cancer treatment may impact it.

No significant difference was found in either pain, nor QoL between CSSR and CFR. CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive status should be taken into account when choosing QoL questionnaires. Further research should assess QoL as acute and long-term adverse effects of cancer treatment may impact it.
