How Does Modular Innovation Enhance Project Resilience Through Flexibility: The Moderating Effect of Building Information Modeling Affordance

In the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) context, modular innovation serves as a crucial approach to enhancing project resilience within prefabricated construction. Leveraging dynamic capability theory, our study proposes a conceptual framework and conducts empirical testing using regression analysis on survey data from 251 modular projects. Results demonstrate that modular innovation significantly strengthens project resilience, with project flexibility acting as a partial mediator. Furthermore, building information modeling (BIM) affordance positively moderates the effect of modular innovation on project flexibility. These findings advance the understanding of how modular innovation functions in bolstering project resilience and offer managerial insights to enhance project resilience through the lens of dynamic capability.
