Spatial Pattern of Social Disparities among Districts of Jharkhand

Spatial Pattern of Social Disparities among Districts of Jharkhand Dr. Kumari Sundram The study “Spatial Patterns of Social Disparities among Districts of Jharkhand” examines the uneven distribution of social development across Jharkhand and identifies the geographical dimensions of social inequality. Despite significant economic growth and abundant mineral resources, the state continues to exhibit considerable disparities in social development indicators. This study aims to analyze these variations using selected indicators related to education, health, sanitation, drinking water, housing conditions, and other socio-economic dimensions derived primarily from Census and secondary data source. A composite social development index was constructed using standardized (Z-score) values of the selected indicators to measure the relative levels of social development across districts. Spatial analysis techniques were then employed to identify patterns of concentration, clustering, and regional inequalities. The findings reveal distinct spatial variations in social development, with districts such as Ranchi, East Singhbhum, and Dhanbad exhibiting comparatively higher levels due to better infrastructure, urbanization, educational facilities, and access to public services. In contrast, districts like Pakur, Sahibganj, Godda, and several western and northeastern districts demonstrate lower levels of social development, reflecting inadequate access to basic amenities, lower literacy rates, and weaker health infrastructure.Furthermore, the study highlights that social disparities are closely associated with historical, geographical, and economic factors, including urban concentration, tribal population distribution, accessibility, and the unequal allocation of development resources. The spatial patterns indicate the emergence of moderate development zones surrounding major urban centers and low-development pockets in peripheral and remote districts. Ultimately, this research underscores the critical need for region-specific planning and targeted policy interventions to reduce inter-district disparities and promote balanced social development. Strengthening education, healthcare, sanitation, safe drinking water supplies, and rural infrastructure in lagging districts can contribute significantly to achieving inclusive and equitable development across Jharkhand. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers, planners, and researchers concerned with regional development and social equity in the state.
