Teaching accounting to hospitality students
Knowledge of accounting is important for the career success of students majoring in hospitality, especially in the first two years after graduation. Yet, hospitality students do not like accounting. This article explores the literature to be in a position to select suitable learning materials that teach accounting effectively with sufficient (support) scaffolding and fun. First, the pedagogy of hospitality education is defined. Second, the level and content of accounting knowledge for hospitality students are defined. These two narrow the set of suitable learning activities down to case studies. A practical section describes case selection criteria, case journal sources, and case examples. Hospitality students and accounting teachers will benefit from this article for the practical suggestions it provides, i.e., case examples, case selection criteria, and case (journal) sources. Accounting teachers and deans in hospitality and business programmes can benefit from this article through the detailed analysis of teaching accounting to hospitality students.
