Intergenerational Trauma and Substance Use in Black Families: Implications for Family-Centered Counseling Practice

This conceptual article examines the relationship between intergenerational trauma and substance use in Black families, specifically the influence of historical oppression, racism, and adverse family experiences on patterns of substance use. This article examines how trauma is transmitted across generations, contributing to substance use susceptibility through an exploration of family systems, attachment, and resilience frameworks. We offer culturally responsive, family-centered counseling approaches that promote healing, strengthen relationship bonds, and disrupt cycles of trauma and addiction. Implications for counseling practice and family engagement are discussed.
