S-Triazine-Imidazole-Coumarin (TIC) Based Polymers with Its Flame-Retardant and Fluorescent Behaviour
The integration of s triazine, imidazole, and coumarin (TIC) heterocycles into polymeric frameworks has enabled the development of multifunctional materials that simultaneously offer flame retardant performance and advanced photophysical behavior. The recent progress in TIC based polymer design focuses on structure–property relationships, synergistic effects, and emerging technological applications. s Triazine derivatives contribute outstanding condensed phase flame retardancy through dense char formation, high thermal stability, and robust P–N/C–N networks, achieving limiting oxygen index (LOI) values above 28% and UL 94 V 0 ratings in numerous polymer systems. Imidazole containing polymers further enhance material performance by providing tunable electronic properties, metal chelating behavior, and exceptional thermal resilience, with degradation onset temperatures reaching up to 600°C. Their ability to support solid state fluorescence and photoconductivity also broadens their applicability in sensing and electronic devices. Coumarin functional polymers exhibit high quantum yields (up to 87%), emissions, and selective ion sensing capabilities, making them promising candidates for optoelectronics, environmental monitoring, and bioimaging. By comparing synthetic strategies, flame retardant mechanisms, and photophysical characteristics across TIC systems, fire resistance, fluorescence, and multifunctionality. The opportunities lie in sustainable synthesis, improved device integration, and the design of materials for sensors, smart coatings, energy devices, and advanced safety applications.
