Can Tiered Genomic Surveillance Close the Gaps in Measles Molecular Epidemiology?
Haque et al. in their recent communication [1] have highlighted the possible factors responsible for the measles outbreak in Bangladesh. The authors have emphasised that measles elimination depends on robust surveillance systems, prompt outbreak detection, and rapid public health interventions.Monitoring of disease trends and timely identification of transmission patterns are pertinent to support measles elimination goals [2].The measles virus has a high transmissibility rate (R 0 of 12-18) [3] and the infection can spread rapidly in susceptible subjects.
