Synthetic Applications of Hypervalent Iodine Reagents in Multicomponent Reactions

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) provide an efficient strategy for the rapid assembly of structurally diverse molecules from simple starting materials in a one‐pot manner. Meanwhile, hypervalent iodine reagents have emerged as versatile and environmentally benign reagents owing to their unique oxidative properties and diverse activation modes. The merger of hypervalent iodine chemistry with MCRs has enabled numerous efficient transformations involving oxidative activation, radical relay processes, electrophilic group transfer, and carbynoid chemistry. This review summarizes recent advances in hypervalent iodine‐mediated MCRs involving acyclic iodine(III) reagents, cyclic hypervalent iodine reagents, diaryliodonium salts, and iodine(V) reagents.

Abstract

Multicomponent reactions (MCRs) provide an efficient strategy for the rapid assembly of structurally diverse molecules from simple starting materials in a one‐pot manner. Meanwhile, hypervalent iodine reagents have emerged as versatile and environmentally benign reagents owing to their unique oxidative properties and diverse activation modes. The merger of hypervalent iodine chemistry with MCRs has enabled numerous efficient transformations involving oxidative activation, radical relay processes, electrophilic group transfer, and carbynoid chemistry. This review summarizes recent advances in hypervalent iodine‐mediated MCRs involving acyclic iodine(III) reagents, cyclic hypervalent iodine reagents, diaryliodonium salts, and iodine(V) reagents.
