Workshop 1: Designed to Be Revised: Creating Documentation with the Community-based Resource of the Core Preservation Processes from EOSC EDEN

This workshop introduces the Core Preservation Processes (CPPs), a practical and collaborative resource for planning, describing and evaluating digital preservation workflows. Developed by the EOSC EDEN project (2025–2027), the CPPs aim to contribute to digital preservation capacities for research data across Europe. Created by an interdisciplinary working group of digital preservation practitioners from multiple European institutions, the resource consists of 30 essential system- and domain-agnostic preservation processes that support organisations in adopting the right preservation activities according to their disciplinary and institutional needs. The workshop explores digital preservation workflows as an on-going and collaborative practice. During the development of the CPPs, processes were continuously proposed, revised, split, merged, and occasionally even discarded. Sometimes, such decisions carried a feeling of “failure”. Rather than treating iterations as setbacks, however, the group approached them as productive checkpoints to uncover hidden assumptions, negotiate terminology, and reflect on the limits of existing standards and practices. In this sense, CPP development has become a form of collaborative play that is now open for everyone to join on Github. Participants will gain insight into the methodology behind the CPP framework and discuss how iterative thinking, community participation, and openness can strengthen professional preservation practice. The workshop will demonstrate how the CPPs can be applied for workflow analysis, communication, and training. Finally, participants will be introduced to opportunities for engaging with the CPPs as a living, community-driven resource hosted on GitHub, encouraging ongoing contribution and collaboration across the wider digital preservation community.
