Effects of Rotational Components of Near-Fault Ground Motions on Seismic Responses of Single-Layer Cylindrical Reticulated Shells
Abstract Combining theoretical analysis with numerical simulation, this paper investigates the influence patterns and action mechanisms of rotational components of near-fault ground motions on single-layer cylindrical reticulated shells. First, a simplified dynamic model under multiaxial rotational excitations was developed. Subsequently, an optimized frequency-domain approach was employed to derive the rotational components of ground motions. Ten cylindrical shell finite element models were established by varying structural parameters, and six near-fault ground motion records, consisting of three pulse-like and three nonpulsed types, were selected for time-history analysis. The coupling response characteristics between structural translational and rotational motions under strong seismic excitations were systematically clarified as well as the action patterns and mechanisms governing the effects of rotational seismic motions on single-layer cylindrical reticulated shells. Moreover, the evolution of rotational component effects with varying structural parameters was discussed in depth. The influence of rotational components in near-fault pulse-type ground motions on the exceedance probabilities of different structural limit states is evaluated. Finally, this paper explores the superior seismic isolation performance of the friction pendulum isolation system in the context of rotational component effects.
