MindForm — Foundational Input and Temperament: Where the Other Eight Papers' Newborn Conventions Originate
Every substrate documented in this series runs inside the turn: a refresh, an event, a formation step. This paper documents the one that does not. Foundational Input and Temperament runs once, at genesis, before any turn exists to run inside, and its subject is unusual among the eight papers that precede it: rather than introducing a new mechanism, it names one that four separate prior papers had each independently adopted as a design convention without a common origin to point to — a character born with no divergence between disposition and constitution, stated four times across four substrates as a deliberate parallel. This paper shows the parallel is not a coincidence but a single function, computed once, that sets every one of those conditions in one pass. Genesis produces two coupled quantities from a short biography: a trait baseline mirroring McCrae and Costa's basic-tendency construct, and a plasticity rate mapping onto the individual-difference claim of Belsky's differential susceptibility hypothesis, though without the theory's directional for-better-and-for-worse asymmetry. A third category, identity, is drawn from the same biography but is neither innate nor earned — fixed by report and never subsequently revised by any formation dynamic in the architecture — while Character remains unconditionally blank at birth regardless of what any biography states. The node's language-model-primary, heuristic-fallback structure repeats a pattern used throughout this series, but at higher stakes than anywhere else it appears: every other node's degraded path affects one turn, while this one permanently seeds a temperament a character carries for its entire existence. The paper's most substantive finding emerges from holding the node's own two outputs against each other: the plasticity rate individuates how strongly a trait resists momentary perturbation, but the slow drift term that eventually relocates the trait baseline itself is uniform across every character, unprotected by the very parameter this node introduces to represent resilience. Five prior papers' unresolved feedback questions each depend, at some remove, on the two quantities this node sets once and never revisits.
