The Anicca Needs Alignment Grid: A Framework for Diagnosing Communication Misalignment in Organizations
Communication breakdown in organizations is often attributed to deficiencies in information, leadership, or interpersonal skill. This article proposes a different explanation: that relational misalignment frequently emerges through reciprocal assumptions about evolving psychological needs. Individuals commonly infer what others need based on their own preferences and expectations while simultaneously expecting their own unspoken needs to be intuitively recognized by others. As organizational conditions and relationships evolve, these assumptions may persist despite changing circumstances, producing what this paper conceptualizes as alignment drift. To examine this process, the article introduces the Anicca Needs Alignment Grid, a communication-centered conceptual framework that explains how projection, silence, interpretation, and expectation formation interact recursively to produce communicative misalignment over time. The framework integrates insights from organizational communication, social cognition, and relational communication research to provide a structured explanation for recurring relational breakdowns in leadership interaction, teamwork, and organizational change. The article contributes to organizational communication scholarship by positioning alignment drift as a dynamic communicative process rather than solely a cognitive or interpersonal phenomenon.
