Swiss Ephemerisの非公開フィッティング戦略とΔT外挿モデルの独立再構築 ─ 日心・重心フィットの再発見と、出処不明係数の出典追跡調査が示す説明可能性の非対称性 ─ / Independent Reconstruction of Swiss Ephemeris's Undisclosed Fitting Strategy and ΔT Extrapolation Model — Rediscovering Heliocentric/Barycentric Fitting, and t
--- English Swiss Ephemeris does not disclose the interval width, polynomial order, or decomposition scheme (hereafter "fitting strategy") it uses when re-approximating JPL DE ephemerides with Chebyshev polynomials, nor the extrapolation model it uses to predict future ΔT (the UT⇔TT/TDB conversion). This paper reports how far each of these two undisclosed elements can be reconstructed using only an audit of the publicly available AGPL source code, tracing of the cited academic papers, and independent numerical experiments, without ever accessing Swiss Ephemeris's own non-public tools. For the fitting strategy, this paper starts from an asymmetric observation left by the author's prior papers — that Mercury and the Moon can be reproduced at high precision by directly fitting geocentric ecliptic longitude, whereas the Sun, Venus, Mars, and the outer planets require independently fitting heliocentric/barycentric positions and composing them at evaluation time to reach Swiss Ephemeris's actual residual level — and newly identifies the contamination of the Sun's own wobble (relative to the Earth-Moon barycenter) as the missing factor, arriving at a single consistent design ("heliocentric/barycentric fitting plus composition at evaluation time") across all ten bodies. This design matches the structure of the VSOP-series analytical theories developed over nearly half a century in the field of analytical ephemerides. For the ΔT extrapolation model, this paper fully identifies the formula itself (its functional form) at the source-code level, and reproduces both Swiss Ephemeris's and Skyfield's actual ΔT values to decimal precision via an independent implementation. Using this identified formula in a comparison experiment, this paper confirms numerically that a residual of up to about 2 arcseconds — previously labeled "unexplained" — vanishes as soon as both sides of the comparison are unified to use Swiss Ephemeris's own ΔT formula, and confirms that this conclusion is robust in an extended experiment spanning distant epochs in both the past and future. Some of the formula's coefficients (the first- and second-order coefficients of the cubic segment) turned out to be values whose provenance could not be found even in the body of the cited academic paper. However, by compiling the full commit history of the relevant code and tracing it through the Wayback Machine, this paper identifies with near certainty that these values originate not from the paper's body text but from an extrapolated-data table published on an official supplementary page maintained by the paper's own author team. Furthermore, this paper constructs an independent alternative ΔT model (called the "Stella lens") from primary sources alone, without ever referencing Swiss Ephemeris's source code, and quantifies how much the difference between this model and Swiss Ephemeris's formula affects position calculations across multiple bodies and epochs. The initial version, built from the academic paper Skyfield itself cites as its source, produced a non-negligible lunar position difference of about 9.6 arcminutes at a distant epoch (the year 3000). However, once the provenance-tracing investigation above identified the source of Swiss Ephemeris's unattributed coefficients, an independently rebuilt revised model ("Stella lens v4") — using only that same newly identified source, and never referencing Swiss Ephemeris's coefficients — reduced the position difference at the same epoch dramatically, to the 1–2 arcsecond level. Stella lens v4's four coefficients numerically agreed with Swiss Ephemeris's actual coefficients to within 2%, but this does not mean Stella lens v4 "reproduced" Swiss Ephemeris's design decisions or conversion procedure itself (following the distinction between "agreement" and "reproduction" defined in Section 2.3 of this paper). Note that both models are extrapolations beyond the range of observational data, so this shrinking of the positional difference only means the two models moved closer together — it does not mean the model became more accurate relative to Earth's true rotation (see Section 5.7). This result shows that, as with the fitting strategy, the ΔT model can also converge to a close numerical value through independent effort, provided the correct primary source can be reached at all. At the same time, it confirms that the task of identifying which of countless possible primary sources and information channels Swiss Ephemeris actually consulted, and the procedure for converting that source's raw data into specific coefficients, remain design decisions that cannot be reconstructed from public information alone. This paper suggests that Swiss Ephemeris's truly undisclosed asset is not the individual formulas themselves, but the chain of design decisions involved in selecting one specific combination out of countless possible information sources and conversion procedures.
