The Norwegian monarchy under strain: symbolic boundary collapse and resilience in the platform age

This paper examines how symbolic institutions become vulnerable to legitimacy strain under platformized media conditions, using the Norwegian monarchy as a case. It develops a contingent framework of symbolic boundary collapse by integrating institutional legitimacy, symbolic capital, symbolic politics, parasociality, and crisis communication. The analysis argues that platformized visibility intensifies symbolic proximity, emotional salience, and associative judgment, weakening formal distinctions between institutions and symbolically adjacent actors. At the same time, symbolic boundary collapse is treated not as an inevitable outcome, but as one possible trajectory of symbolic strain alongside containment, reinterpretation, and symbolic resilience. A comparative framework structured around the severity of misconduct, symbolic proximity, institutional centrality, and baseline symbolic capital clarifies why similar scandals may produce different legitimacy outcomes. The Norwegian case shows how a high-severity criminal conviction involving a peripheral but proximate actor and lower-severity controversies involving a central figure can interact to generate cumulative boundary stress in a high-trust context. Brief comparisons with other European monarchies illustrate how platformized scandal may produce erosion, managed separation, absorption, or institutional reset. The paper contributes to debates on symbolic legitimacy by showing how platformized visibility reshapes reputational risk for institutions whose authority depends on moral credibility rather than instrumental performance.
